Card grading guide
Should I Grade My Pokémon Card?
Use AI Before You Submit
You have a Pokémon card that looks nearly perfect. The raw card is worth $100, but a PSA 10 sells for $500.
Should you send it for grading?
The answer isn't determined by the PSA 10 price. You need to know:
- What is your card worth raw?
- What grade is your actual card likely to receive?
- What grade do you need to justify the cost of grading?
PokeGrade can help with the second question by using AI to analyze your Pokémon card's centering, corners, edges and surface before you pay to submit it to a professional grading company.
Then you can compare your AI Estimated Grade against your Break-Even Grade.
The Simple Test
AI Estimated Grade > Break-Even Grade
Your estimated grade clears the financial threshold. The card may be worth investigating further for professional grading.
AI Estimated Grade ≈ Break-Even Grade
The economics are close. Inspect the card carefully and consider grading costs, selling fees and the possibility of receiving a lower grade.
AI Estimated Grade < Break-Even Grade
If you're grading primarily for resale, the numbers may not support professional grading.
This isn't a guarantee of what PSA, CGC, BGS or another professional grader will assign. It's a way to make a more informed decision before spending money on grading.

A card can look perfect at first glance and still have defects that affect its grade. PokeGrade analyzes photographs of your card across four areas:
Centering
How evenly the card's design is positioned within its borders.
Corners
Whitening, rounding and other visible corner damage.
Edges
Chipping, whitening and wear around the perimeter of the card.
Surface
Visible scratches, print lines, marks and other surface imperfections.
Instead of simply deciding that a card “looks mint,” you get a structured assessment of where its strengths and weaknesses may be.
A PokeGrade result might look something like:
PSA Grade Estimate: 9
Centering: 9.5 · Corners: 9.5 · Edges: 9.0 · Surface: 8.5
Biggest grading risk: Surface
The result gives you somewhere specific to look. If surface is the weakest area, inspect the physical card carefully under good lighting before considering professional grading.
Step 2: Calculate Your Break-Even Grade
Next, determine what professional grade you need before grading becomes financially attractive.
Start with:
Raw card value + total grading costs
Suppose your card is worth $100 raw. Your grading, shipping and related costs are approximately $40. Your starting point is therefore:
$100 + $40 = $140
Now look at recent sales of the same card at different grades.
| Result | Example Value | Difference vs $140 |
|---|---|---|
| Raw | $100 | — |
| PSA 8 | $95 | -$45 |
| PSA 9 | $150 | +$10 |
| PSA 10 | $500 | +$360 |
In this simplified example, PSA 9 is the first grade above the $140 threshold. Your break-even grade is therefore approximately:
PSA 9
This is a simplified calculation. If you're planning to sell the card, transaction fees, taxes, insurance and other expenses can also matter.
Pokémon Card Grading Break-Even Calculator
Use this before submitting a card. Enter your own values to compare the raw card value plus professional grading costs with PSA 8, 9 and 10 values.
Step 3: Compare Your AI Grade With Your Break-Even Grade
This is where AI Pokémon card grading becomes useful for deciding what to submit.
Suppose PokeGrade estimates:
PSA 9
And your break-even calculation says:
PSA 9
Your card is around the financial threshold.
AI Estimated Grade: PSA 8
Break-Even Grade: PSA 10
You'd be relying on the professional grade substantially exceeding the AI pre-grade.
AI Estimated Grade: PSA 10
Break-Even Grade: PSA 8
This provides a larger apparent margin between estimated condition and your financial threshold.
The point isn't for PokeGrade to tell you “grade” or “don't grade.” It gives you information you can use to make that decision.
Don't Just Look at the Most Likely Grade
A single estimated grade doesn't tell the whole story. Where available, consider the probability of different outcomes.
Imagine two cards both have PSA 9 as their most likely estimate.
Card A
PSA 10: 30%
PSA 9: 60%
PSA 8: 10%
Card B
PSA 10: 10%
PSA 9: 55%
PSA 8: 35%
Both have the same headline estimate, but they don't have the same range of possible outcomes. If your break-even grade is PSA 9, the possibility of receiving an 8 matters. If most of the card's value is concentrated in PSA 10, the probability of achieving a 10 matters even more.
That's why an AI grade is better interpreted as an estimate with uncertainty, not a guaranteed professional grade.
Don't Make the PSA 10 Mistake
One of the easiest mistakes when deciding whether to grade a Pokémon card is comparing only Raw Price vs PSA 10 Price.
Raw: $100
PSA 10: $500
It looks like grading could create $400 of additional value. But your card isn't a PSA 10 until a professional grading company gives it that grade.
Suppose the complete market looks like this:
Raw: $100 · PSA 8: $95 · PSA 9: $150 · PSA 10: $500
The important question isn't:
“How much is this Pokémon card worth in PSA 10?”
It's:
“What is my actual card likely to grade, and what is that grade worth?”
Use AI to Find Problems You Might Have Missed
The overall AI grade isn't the only useful part of a PokeGrade result. Look at the weakest category.
| Category | AI Assessment |
|---|---|
| Centering | 9.5 |
| Corners | 9.5 |
| Edges | 9.5 |
| Surface | 8.0 |
The card may initially look excellent. But the result tells you to pay particular attention to the surface. Take the physical card and inspect it again under good indirect lighting and from several angles. You might discover a print line, scratch or another imperfection that wasn't obvious during your first inspection.
AI identifies a potential weakness → you inspect that area manually → you decide whether professional grading is worth pursuing.
Check the Quality of Your Photos
AI grading depends on what can actually be seen in the photographs. A poor photograph can hide defects or make a card difficult to assess.
Before relying on an AI pre-grade, check that:
- The entire card is visible.
- All four corners are clear.
- The image is sharp.
- There is minimal glare.
- The card isn't photographed at an extreme angle.
- You have clear images of both the front and back.
- Reflective surfaces aren't hiding scratches or other defects.
If the result has low confidence or doesn't look consistent with the physical card, take better photographs and try again. A second AI assessment costs nothing. A professional grading submission doesn't.
How to Pre-Grade a Large Pokémon Card Collection
The value of AI grading becomes even clearer when you have dozens or hundreds of potential submissions. Instead of sending everything for professional grading, use a funnel:
Collection
Identify potentially valuable cards
AI pre-grade
Remove obvious weak candidates
Check raw and graded market values
Calculate break-even grade
Manually inspect shortlisted cards
Decide which cards to submit
If you have 100 possible grading candidates, the objective isn't necessarily to predict the exact professional grade of all 100. The objective is to use inexpensive information to identify which cards deserve more attention. That's one of the most practical applications of AI Pokémon card grading.
When the Financial Calculation Doesn't Matter
Not everyone grades Pokémon cards to make money. You may want a card professionally graded because:
- It's part of your personal collection.
- It has sentimental value.
- You want professional authentication.
- You prefer displaying slabbed cards.
- You're building a graded set.
- You want additional physical protection.
In those cases, your break-even grade may not matter. A card can be worth grading to you even when the financial calculation doesn't support grading it for resale. The break-even test is primarily useful when your decision is based on financial value.
What AI Pokémon Card Grading Cannot Do
AI pre-grading has limitations. PokeGrade evaluates photographs. A professional grader physically examines the card.
Some defects can be difficult or impossible to identify reliably from a photograph, particularly subtle surface issues, indentations, reflections or imperfections visible only under particular lighting conditions.
PokeGrade also doesn't authenticate or encapsulate cards and doesn't issue an official PSA, CGC, BGS or TAG grade.
Professional grading determines the official grade your submitted card receives.
AI pre-grading gives you additional information before deciding whether to submit it.
Use the grading standards guide for educational context, but refer to the professional company you choose for its official criteria and final outcome.
So, Should You Grade Your Pokémon Card?
Don't make the decision from the PSA 10 price alone. Use this five-question test:
- 1. What is the card worth raw?
Use recent sales of the exact card and variant. - 2. What condition does your actual card appear to be in?
Use AI pre-grading and inspect the physical card yourself. - 3. What grades appear realistically possible?
Consider the estimated grade, confidence and range of outcomes rather than assuming the best possible result. - 4. What is the card worth at those grades?
Look at multiple grade levels—not just PSA 10. - 5. What is your break-even grade?
Compare the card's raw value plus grading costs against graded market values.
AI Estimated Grade: ___
Break-Even Grade: ___
That comparison won't make the decision for you. But it gives you considerably more information than simply looking at the price of a PSA 10.

Can AI tell me if my Pokémon card is worth grading?
AI can help assess the visible condition of your card. Whether professional grading is financially worthwhile also depends on the raw card value, expected graded values and your total grading costs. Comparing your AI Estimated Grade with your Break-Even Grade provides a useful framework.
Can AI predict whether a Pokémon card will get a PSA 10?
AI can estimate visible card condition from photographs, but it cannot guarantee the grade PSA will assign. Professional graders physically inspect submitted cards and determine the official grade.
What is a Pokémon card's break-even grade?
The break-even grade is the approximate professional grade at which the graded value exceeds the card's raw value plus grading-related costs. If you're selling the card, you should also consider transaction fees and other expenses.
Is it worth grading a Pokémon card if it won't get a PSA 10?
Potentially. Some cards can be worth substantially more in PSA 8 or PSA 9 than raw, while others derive most of their graded premium from PSA 10. Check the market values of your specific card at multiple grades.
Should I grade a Pokémon card for my personal collection?
That's a personal collecting decision. Financial return isn't the only reason to grade. Collectors may value authentication, protection, presentation or having a consistent graded collection.
Is PokeGrade the same as PSA grading?
No. PokeGrade is an AI-assisted pre-grading tool. It doesn't physically authenticate or encapsulate cards and doesn't issue official PSA grades. It can be used before professional grading to help assess a card's visible condition.
Can I AI grade my Pokémon cards for free?
Yes. You can upload Pokémon card images to PokeGrade and receive an AI-assisted grading assessment for free.
